Grade A is the highest-rated system, with F being the lowest. Residential properties will, more than likely, have D-F systems installed, while commercial properties require more advanced fire alarm installations.
Grade A equipment must conform to BS5839 Parts 1 or 6 – Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems for Buildings. The arrangement must include separate smoke alarms, heat detection devices, alarm sounders, and a central control panel. All components must be linked to a backup power system.
Subsequent to the fire alarm grades outlined in the latest edition of BS589, there is also a series of fire alarm categories specifically for commercial properties.
